Compensation
Compensation at Seneca Systems works a bit differently compared with your traditional startup.
There are a few issues we wanted to fix, which we outline briefly here. Please see the salary and equity sections to read the full details.
Horizontal Pay Discrimination
Horizontal pay discrimination is when two people have the same role and are paid differently. This is a result of a few things:
- Arbitrary discrimination (gender, race, age, etc.)
- Pay secrecy
- Negotiations
We eliminate horizontal pay discrimination by paying every person with the same role the same base salary. Every role's salary is published internally, which holds us accountable.
The next policy handles negotiations.
Negotiations
To eliminate the discriminary effects of negotiations, as well collosal time and emotional effort wasted, we do not negotiate salaries with individuals.
Since salaries are tied to roles, any salary changes affect every person with that role.
Inflation
At least once per year, we adjust salaries to account for inflation.
For example, in July of 2016 we raised salaries across the board by 1% based on the release of government data.
